You can see them sunbathing in Maspalomas or El Inglés, shopping in Triana, having a drink in local pubs ... Yes, they are TOURISTS. But, do you know anything about them? Do you know where they come from, or if it is their first time in the island? Do you know why they have decided to spend their holidays here? Well, with this project you will learn lots of things about the more than 10 million tourists who come to the Canary Islands every year.

Make teams of six.
Your teacher will give you a topic.
In class, make questions about that topic. Make sure people can understand what you are asking, and that you can pronounce all words.
On 9th February we'll go to Maspalomas, so that you can interview tourists. In Maspalomas, groups will be formed with one student from each team. You will be given about two hours to make interviews and write down the answers you get. The more interviews you do, the better! And extra marks will be given to students who record some of their interviews (you can use mobile phones, or MP3 players).

Back at school, you'll meet your team and prepare a presentation about your topic. You must include:

Don't forget that your Maths teacher will also evaluate this project, so you should turn data into graphs, etc.

What it can be done to boost and improve tourism.

Analyse the answers you have got. Is there anything we can, should, must, mustn't do so that tourists know us better, and they decide to come back again in the future?

	1. The place. You will have to learn why people decided to come here, whether it is their first time in the island, how long they are going to stay, etc.
	2. The accommodation. If this is your topic, you will have to ask where they are staying, why they chose that type of accommodation, etc.
	3. Moving around. Sometimes tourists just stay at their hotels and do not travel around. Make some questions to find out if they have, why or why not, which places they have been to, which museums they have visited, etc.
	4. Food. Fish, stews, papas con mojo, lots of different vegetables and fruit ... Canarian food is so varied that it is almost impossible not to like it. But what about tourists?
	5. Comparison to other places. They have probably been on holiday to other countries or places. If so, how do they compare to Gran Canaria? Are they more interesting, maybe cheaper?

In an opinion essay, you present your personal opinion on a particular topic. Your opinion must be stated clearly and supported by justifications. Also, you can present an opposing viewpoint in a separate paragraph.

An opinion essay should consist of:

An introduction, in which you introduce the subject and state your opinion clearly.
A main body consisting of two or more paragraphs, in which you present your viewpoints supported by reasons or examples. You can also pressent opposing viewpoints in a different paragraph.
A conclusion, in which you restate your opinion.

To state your opinion, you can use one of these expressions:

I believe / think / feel (that) ...
In my opinion ...
I (strongly) disagree that / with ...
I (completely) agree that / with ...

Should Dangerous Sports Be Banned?

Today, many sports are being regulated to improve safety standards and to reduce injuries. But for some people this is not enough, and they would like to see some dangerous sports banned completely. In my opinion, they should not be banned.

To start with, a challenging sport provides a healthy, largely safe, physical outlet for aggression. There is no evidence to show that people who take part in dangerous sports become violent as a result. In fact, dangerous sports may act as a safety valve for a society by reducing stress.

Moreover, almost all sports involve some risk. There is almost no sport without danger, and, for example, even golf or jogging can lead to pain or injury. Without some elements of risk or challenge, sport becomes meaningless.

However, for some people dangerous sports such as boxing are nothing but an excuse for violence, and they think that the last thing an increasingly violent world needs is more violence on our television.

All things considered, I think our society would be healthier if more people took part in sports of all kinds, as long as they are challenging, exciting, and, above all, fun. So there is no need to ban any sport.

As different styles of music have become popular throughout history, some young people have responded by forming social groups whose activities are based around listening to that particular kind of music. They construct their identities around it, assuming certain fashions and attitudes.

During the 20th century, fashion was heavily influenced by music. Rock and roll, punk, hip hop, not only changed the way people acted; they also changed the way people dressed and did their hair.

In this project you will have to find some facts about a music/fashion style and present them to your class.

Playing the game

You probably practice sport but, even if you don't, you surely watch it on TV. You are not a sporty person? No problem! You must know who are Messi, Nadal, Gasol ... and that's the only thing you need to do this project.

There are so many famous sportspeople that it will be very easy to choose one and tell the rest of your classmates about him/her.

a trip to London, a project for English

Gloria lives in El Calero, Telde. In this picture we can see her at home with her youngest son, Santi.

Gloria has got another son, Jonathan. He is 13 and studies in our highschol. Jonathan is always eating snacks and fast food, so his mother is really worried about his diet.

She is so worried that during her last meeting with Jonathan's tutor she asked for some advice. Jonathan's tutor told Jose Vico, the headmaster, and it occurred to him that some group could plan a healthy diet for Jonathan. Why not 2ºD?

To be able to carry out this task you'll get help from your P.E., Maths, and English teachers.

In P.E. you'll learn what a healthy and balanced diet is, and its importance.

In Maths you will work with proportions, so you can calculate how many calories there are in different food and dishes.

In English you'll learn vocabulary on food, and how to compare things.

Next April we are going to spend five days in Garañón. I'm sure we'll have such a great time together that we'll always remember that school trip. But ... just in case ... why don't we write our experiences in a blog? That way, we will always be able to look at the pictures we took and read about the things we did.

I always spend Chistmas in Madrid, with my family.

On the 24th, if the weather is good, I like going jogging to El Retiro, a big park near my mother's home. But, sometimes, I can't go because I have to buy the last Christmas presents. The shops are always full of people, but I don't mind. In the afternoon I go for a walk to watch the Christmas lights, or I take my son, my nephews and my niece to the cinema.

On Christmas Eve we always have dinner at home, but we never start before 10:00, so when we sit at the table I'm very hungry! After dinner we open presents and stay up talking until 2 or 3 in the morning.

Today is 29th December. In Madrid the weather is really cold and snowy. People are wearing coats, scarves and gloves.

It's 21:15 and I'm at home. My husband and one of my sisters are cooking dinner (mmm ... it smells delicious!) and my son Carlos and my nephew Lucas are playing PSP games. My niece Ana is talking to her father on the phone. I think she is angry, because she is shouting ... My mother is watching the news on TV, and me? Well, I'm writing this post!

POINSETTIA

It comes from Mexico. This tradition started in the 1830s, after Dr Poinsett introduced the plant in the United States.

SANTA CLAUS

It is a British tradition. It comes from the 12th century, when a church holiday was created in the honor of saint Nicholas. In the 17th century, colonist brought this tradition to America and here the name of Santa Claus appeared.
It's a symbol of joyous giving.

STOCKINGS

This tradition comes from Holland.
People put stockings by the fireplace so Santa Claus can leave presents in them.

NATIVITY

Saint Francis of Assisi made the first nativity scene in Italy in 1224.
It represents the story of Jesus' birth.

LUCKY GRAPES

It is a Spanish tradition. It started about 100 years ago.
People eat the twelve grapes because they bring you fortune in the New Year.

CAROLS

They started in the Middle Ages. When St. Francis of Assisi created the first nativity scene, some people sang the first carols. They were about Mary, the sepherds, and the birth of Jesus.

CANDY CANE

This tradition started in the 17th century in Germany. Then, in the 1950s Gregory Keller invented a machine to produce candy canes and they became very popular in the USA.
The white represents the virgin birth of Jesus, and the red, Jesus' blood.

While you are reading this, a lot of things are going on around you: people are listening to music, reading books or newspapers, chatting with friends, cooking, doing homework, working, sleeping ...
And we can guess what is happening around just by one of our senses:hearing!

From my room, this is what I can hear right now:

And from those sounds I can say that some children are playing in the park. Now it's your turn. Close your eyes and listen. What can you hear?

an art exhibition, a project for English

Our school has planned an art exhibition in the library, and you have been selected as guides. You will have to be prepared to describe one or two pictures to visitors. We may have someone recording your presentation in the library!

tasks

Work in pairs.
Decide which picture(s) from the video above you are going to describe, and tell your teacher.
Get ready for your presentation. You will have to talk about:

the name of the picture and the artist,
what colours the artist has used,
what you can see in the painting (people, animals, a river, etc.),
what the weather is like,
what people are wearing,
what people are doing,
how people look like (feelings).

To practice pronunciation, watch these videos about clothes, feelings, and the weather.
Do you need help with the name of the artist? Choose from this list and find out who your painter is. You can use a searching engine like Google, or an online encyclopedia like Wikipedia, or you can try at the school library.

We all know that most Canarian teenagers like doing the same things: hanging out with friends, chatting on the Internet, playing computer games, going to the beach ... But do boys and girls like doing the same things? And what about British teens? What do they like doing?

In this project, you are going to find out about British teenagers, and you will compare them to you.

Make groups of six.
Decide which topic you are going to talk about.
Find the information you need.
Present the information in a poster, a video, or a PowerPoint presentation.
